Jehoshua is on the throne of David in New Jerusalem and He is the King of a New Israel
Part 1 of my Psalm chapter 2 study
Psalm Chapter 2 1 Why do the nations rage, And the peoples meditate a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against Jehovah, and against his anointed, [saying], 3 Let us break their bonds asunder, And cast away their cords from us.4 He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh: The Lord will have them in derision. 5 Then will he speak unto them in his wrath, And vex them in his sore displeasure: 6 Yet I have set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will tell of the decree: Jehovah said unto me, Thou art my son; This day have I begotten thee. 8 Ask of me, and I will give [thee] the nations for thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter`s vessel. 10 Now therefore be wise, O ye kings: Be instructed, ye judges of the earth.11 Serve Jehovah with fear, And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish in the way, For his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all they that take refuge in him. What's great about this passage in the book of Psalms is that you can actually preach a summary of the whole gospel using this chapter. Each verse corresponds with either the life, death, resurrection and ascension, and second advent of Jehoshua. Let's look at this chapter and see how it corresponds with the gospel of Jehoshua Messiah, theSon of God. Verses 1 and 2, we know this applies to the persecution the Messiah underwent at the hands of Herod representing the Jews and Pontius Pliate representing the Gentiles. This is Davidic Pslam which in it's immediate context is about David. It also can apply to any Davidic King who goes through similar trials. It is completely fulfilled in Jehoshua. It's noteworthy that David is referred to as the Messiah of Jehovah God. This shows that the Davidic kings were Messiah's of Jehovah. This shows that the title of Messiah (Christ) does not imply deity. It's a title primarily referring to the Davidic King. Acts 4:23-28 23And being let go, they came to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said unto them.24And they, when they heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, O Lord, thou that didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:25who by the Holy Spirit, [by] the mouth of our father David thy servant, didst say, Why did the Gentiles rage, And the peoples imagine vain things?26The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together, Against the Lord, and against his Anointed:27for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together,28to do whatsoever thy hand and thy council foreordained to come to pass. In context, this passage is about Peter and John going into the temple and healing an impotent man and then subsequently preaching the gospel of the Kingdom to their countrymen and preaching the resurrection of the dead of whom Jehoshua is the firstfruits. The rulers, elders and scribes of Israel along with the high priest and his family threatened the apostles not to speak in the name of Jehoshua Messiah. The apostles stood firm in their resolve and said they will obey God rather than man. Peter and John then went back to the congregation and reported what took place and their response was to praise Jehovah God acknowledging Him as the maker of heaven and earth and the sea and all that in them is. This is a clear reference to the 4th commandment which is the Sabbath. It's noteworthy that the early believers closely identified God with His creation of which the Sabbath day is a memorial as the Sabbath commandment contains creation language. The congregation then quotes Psalm 2:1-2 applying David as the author and prophet of it. They attribute the events of Psalm 1:1-2 leading up to and including Jehoshua's death. This includes the betrayal plot as the chief priests, scribes and pharisees and high priest assembled together how they might kill Jehoshua (Matthew 26:3). Matthew 26:59-68 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death;60 and they found it not, though many false witnesses came. But afterward came two,61 and said, This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.62 And the high priest stood up, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God.64 Jesus said unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.65 Then the high priest rent his garments, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy: what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy:66 what think ye? They answered and said, He is worthy of death.67 Then did they spit in his face and buffet him: and some smote him with the palms of their hands,68 saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ: who is he that struck thee? This passage is a perfect example of Psalm 2:1-2, Jehoshua has been arrested having been betrayed by Judas and now appears before the Caiaphas the high priest and the scribes and elders. The sanhedrin fails to produce a reliable witness against Jehoshua, the Son of God. The trial comes down to one question by the high priest as he asks Jehoshua if He is the Messiah and Son of the living God. Jehoshua answers him in the affirmative and then really hits the high priest between the eyes by stating that He is the prophesied Davidic King of Daniel 7:13-14 and Psalm 110:1. "Henceforth ye shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven" This statement by Jehoshua refers to His Kingship, both His enthronement at His ascension and His second advent when He will appear in the sky in the clouds of heaven and be seen by all those who have been resurrected at the sounding of His voice: Revelation 1:7 "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen." This statement was enough to cause the high priest to rent his clothes and lay a blasphemy charge against Jehoshua. The passage ends with the cohorts of the high priest striking Jehoshua and mocking Him by telling Him to "prophesy thou Messiah". Matthew 27:1-2 1When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jehoshua to put him to death:2And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. A perfect example of the fulfillment of Psalm 2:1-3 where the rulers of Israel take counsel against Jehovah's Messiah. They worked in covenant with Pontius Pilate. This was the first example in the last days of the great whore i.e. false religion (Jerusalem) riding the political anti-Messiah beast (the Roman empire). Matthew 27:11-50 details Jehoshua's two trials before Pilate. The first question Pilate asked Jehoshua was whether or not He was King of the Jews, Jehoshua affirmed that He was. The chief priests and elders brought accusations against Jehoshua before Pilate showing that the rulers of Israel and Rome were consorting together to put the Son of God to death. The account in Matthew goes on to show that the Jews would rather have Barabbas released than Jehoshua and also the cowardice of Pilate ignoring his conscience that indeed Jehoshua was a just man. While the Jews get the brunt of the blame for having Jehoshua killed, Pilate was no better as he showed himself to be a coward in this situation and is just as guilty as the rulers of Israel for the death of the Son of God. Pilate's soldiers mock Jehoshua's Kingship claims by putting a robe on Him and a crown of thorns. The rulers of the earth taking counsel against Jehovah's anointed was with the purpose of denying His royalty and His right to the throne of Israel. The accusation against Jehoshua was His claim that He wad King of the Jews (Matthew 27:37). In fact that is what some of the onlookers threw in Jehoshua's face while He hung on the cross (verses 40-43): Matthew 27:42 "He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him." Yet despite the mockings of the on lookers, including the chief priests, elders and scribes (verse 41), a Roman centurion at the moment of Jehoshua's death professed faith in the Sonship (Kingship) of Jehoshua: Matthew 27:54 "Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God." Remember that the title "Son of God" is eqaul to being the King of Israel per the Davidic covenant (2 Sam 7:8-16). The book of Luke details Jehoshua's appearance before Herod whom the apostolic congregation identified as being a fulfillment of Psalm 2:1-3. Luke 23:6-12 6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves. Here is what the church was referring to in Acts 3 by quoting Psalm 2:1-3 and applying to Herod and Pontius Pilate. Former somewhat enemies now became friends over the Jehoshua situation taking counsel together against the King of Israel. Herod and his ment at war mocked Jehoshua by putting Him in a long robe and sending Him back to Pilate. While the Jews were the ones accusing Jehoshua and instigating His trial and eventual death sentence, Pilate was no better as he went along with process for political reasons. Acts 3:12-15 12And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this man? or why fasten ye your eyes on us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him to walk?13The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Servant Jehoshua; whom ye delivered up, and denied before the face of Pilate, when he had determined to release him.14 But ye denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted unto you,15 and killed the Prince of life; whom God raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. Peter acknowledges that Jehoshua is the servant of the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob showing that the apostles identified God as someone other than Jehoshua. The apostles identified Jehoshua as God's servant just as Isaiah the prophet said he would be.(Isaiah 42:1). So we have God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who is Jehovah and we have His anointed servant who is Jehoshua. Two beings whose rulership is being rejected by the rulers of this earth. Peter confirms that it was the leaders of Israel along with some of the regular citizens of Israel that delivered up Jehoshua to Pilate and subsequently denying Him. So again we see the Jews working together with the Romans to conspire against Jehovah and His Messianic King. The religous establisment in Israel denied Jehoshua even when Pilate was set on releasing him. This is a type of the false prophet (Jerusalem, Israel's state religion) joining up with the State beast (the Roman empire) i.e. Babylon. So now that we have looked at the first few verses of Psalm 2 and matched them up with Jehoshua's life let's go to the next few verses. Psalm 2:4-6 4 He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh: The Lord will have them in derision. 5 Then will he speak unto them in his wrath, And vex them in his sore displeasure: 6 Yet I have set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion. Despite the rulers of this earth plotting against Jehovah and His Messiah, He (Jehovah) is in His heavenly sanctuary laughing at their futile plans. He has them in derision (confusion). Babylon comes from the word "babel" and means confusion. The great whore i.e. the false prophet (Jerusalem and the Israelite religion) rode on the back of the antimessiah beast (The Roman empire) forming Babylon the great. Ultimately, both Jerusalem and Rome would be throne into confusion even to the point of the Roman army putting Jerusalem under siege and destroying their temple in A.D. 70. Regardless of the plans of the religious establishment of Israel and the Roman governor and army Jehovah still accomplished His will in setting up Jehoshua as the King of Israel. The holy hill of Zion refers to the heavenly Zion which is where Jehoshua was enthroned as the King of Israel. After Jehoshua was crucified on the cross, the Jews and Romans thought they had conquered the Son of God however Jehovah declared Jehoshua to be the Son of God with power by resurrecting Him from the dead: Romans 1:1-4 1Paul, a servant of Jehoshua Messiah, called [to be] an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,2which he promised afore through his prophets in the holy scriptures,3concerning his Son, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh,4who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead; even Jehoshua Messiah our Lord. The resurrection of Jehoshua was His vindication that His claim to be the Son of God and King of Israel was true. Jehovah God raised up Jehoshua from the dead by the Spirit of holiness. Subsequent to His resurrection Jehoshua ascended to heaven and was enthroned on the throne of David: Hebrews 1:8-9 8 but of the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; And the sceptre of uprightness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee With the oil of gladness above thy fellows. This is a Davidic Kingship coronation hymm and this was pronounced by Jehovah God to His Son Jehoshua in connection with His ascension into heaven. This passage without controversy shows that Jehoshua was installed as the King of Israel upon His ascension into heaven. Just as the earthly Davidic kings were coronated in earthly Zion (Jerusalem), the heavenly Davidic King was installed as the King of Israel in heavenly Zion New Jerusalem which is the city of the living God: Hebrews 12:22-24 22 but ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable hosts of angels, 23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, 24 and to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaketh better than [that of] Abel. Many American Christians mistakenly think that Jehoshua will not sit on the throne of David in earhtly Jerusalem until after His second advent, thereby ushering in a 1,000 year millennium. This idea is clearly refuted by Hebrews 1:8-9 and also the passage above in Hebrews 12 which cleary says the Zion of New covenant believers is not the earthly one but rather the heavenly one which is New Jerusalem, the city of the living God. As verse 23 states the church of the first begotten Son Jehoshua is Headqaurtered in heaven where there are a inumerable company of angels and where the roll call of the saints is. This is why Paul says our citizenship is in heaven (Phillipians 3:20). This is the Zion that Psalm 2:6 refers to in reference to Jehoshua being set as King on Zion's hill. This is why both the author of Hebrews and Paul the apostle exhort believers not to look to earthly Jerusalem but rather the heavenly one (Hebrews 13:13-14) and (Galatians 4:25-26). Even in the book of Psalms it was prophesied that the throne of David would be a heavenly witness before Jehovah God: Psalm 89;34-37 34 My covenant will I not break, Nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. 35 Once have I sworn by my holiness: I will not lie unto David:36 His seed shall endure for ever, And his throne as the sun before me. 37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, And [as] the faithful witness in the sky. Psalm 89 is a commentary on the Davidic covenant and here Jehovah's promise to David is reiterated in that the covenant will be eternally established. David's seed will endure forever and his throne will be established forever as the moon, a faithful witness in the sky. Acts 2 and Acts 13 and Hebrews 1 prove emphatically that this took place at Jehoshua's ascension into heaven. The throne of David in New Jerusalem is a heavenly witness that Jehovah God kept His oath to David. The first sermon after the ascension of the Son of God into heaven was about Him fulfilling the Davidic covenant and be installed as the King of Israel. Acts 2:30-31 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins he would set [one] upon his throne; 31 he foreseeing [this] spake of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left unto Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. Peter clearly says that David prophesied that the covenant Jehovah made with Him would be fulfilled at the promised Messiah's resurrection. The oath God made with David was that one of David's descendants would be raised to up to sit on his (David's) throne and establish it forever. Peter confirms that it was the resurrection of the Messiah that fulfilled the Davidic covenant in that one of the fruit of David's loins would be raised up to sit on his throne. This destroys the idea that the Son of God will not sit on the throne of David until after the second advent in earthly Jerusalem. In Acts 13 Paul confirms that it was the resurrection of the Messiah that fulfilled the Davidic covenant. Acts 2:34-35 34 For David ascended not into the heavens: but he saith himself, Jehovah said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet Peter quotes the most often alluded to old testament text in the new testament Psalm 110:1. This is a prophetic text where David prophesies of the covenant God made with him being fulfilled as he sees his offspring being installed as the King of Israel. This is within the context of the resurrection of the Messiah again showing that in the new covenant the throne of David is in heaven in New Jerusalem not the old earthly one. Acts 13:33-34 33 that God hath fulfilled the same unto our children, in that he raised up Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he hath spoken on this wise, I will give you the holy and sure [blessings] of David. Paul speaks of two events here as in the context of his sermon to his countrymen the raising up of God's anointed one takes place when the anointed one is publicly brought onto the scene of Israel. We know for Jehoshua this took place at His baptism. And at Jehoshua's baptism was quoted by the Father the Psalm 2:7 coronation hymm proving that Jehoshua's baptism was His anointing as King of Israel. It is notable that Nathanael confessed that Jehoshua was the Son of God and King of Israel just two days after His baptism (John 1:49). In verse 34 Paul now goes to the raising up of Jehoshua by resurrection from the dead and says by virtue of the resurrection that Jehoshua has now received the sure mercies of David. What are the sure mercies of David? Isaiah 55 tells us: 3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.4 Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. The sure mercies of David are the fulfillment of the everlasting covenant that Jehovah made with him. The fulfillment of that covenant is the raising up of the seed of David to the throne establishing the Davidic Kingdom forever. The Davidic King is the leader and commander of Israel. Just like Peter & the author of Hebrews, Paul connects the resurrection & ascension of Jehoshua with the fulfillment of the Davidic covenant which is the establishment of the prophesied Messiah on the throne of David. This again is another proof that Jehoshua was set on the throne of David at His ascension into heaven rather than in a future earthly millennium. Psalm 2:7 "I will tell of the decree: Jehovah said unto me, Thou art my son; This day have I begotten thee." This is a coronation hymm of an Israelite King as stated above. When a Davidic king was either anointed or enthroned He entered into a Father-Son covenant relationship with Jehovah God. The begetting mentioned in this passage is not speaking of literal birth but rather is a declaration of pedigrees that the Son of David is both God's covenant Son and anointed King. The begetting mentioned above also is a anointing by the Spirit of Jehovah into the office of King, a spiritual birth from above into Kingship. The Davidic seed's anointing by the holy Spirit into Kingship is His begetting (adoption) as God's Son. Older manucscripts have Psalm 2:7 as being said by the Father at Jehoshua's baptism in Matthew 3:16-17 and Luke 3:22. It was at tjis event that Jehoshua was anointed as the King of Israel and begotten as Jehovah's Son. Again, as mentioned earlier Nathanael confessed that Jehoshua was the Son of God and King of Israel two days after His baptism. Even though Jehoshua did not sit on the throne of David until His ascension into heaven He was the rightful King of Israel from the time He was baptized. This parallels David's experience as he was anointed as the King of Israel long before he sat on the actual throne. David like Jehoshua had to go through a time of trial and testing before he was enthroned yet even during this period he was considered the legitimate King by Jehovah God. This is why we see all throughout Jehoshua's ministry that He is repeatedly referred to as the King of Israel or King of the Jews and the Son of God as His anointing by the holy Spirit inaugurated both His Sonship and Kingship. The title "Son of God" is actually a title belonging to the King of Israel. When we read verse 6 and 7 together it is obvious that the begetting of the Son of God in verse 7 is connected with His being installed as King on Zion's hill. The throne of David and the Sonship of the Messiah are inherently connected as we see both in the old and new testaments. 1 Chronicles 28:5-7 5 And of all my sons (for Jehovah hath given me many sons), he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of Jehovah over Israel.6And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts; for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.7And I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and mine ordinances, as at this day. We see here that Jehovah chose Solomon to sit on the throne of Jehovah i.e. the throne of David and then in the very next verse we read that Jehovah chose Solomon to be His son and subsequently that Jehovah will establish Solomon's Kingdom forever. So the throne of David and the Sonship of David's royal seed and establishment of the Kingdom are intertwined and connected. To be chosen to sit on the throne of David is at the same time to be chosen(begotten) as God's Son. The promise is that if the Davidic King would keep the commandments of God His Kingdom would be established forever. The establishment of an eternal Kingdom of course was ultimately fulfilled in Jehoshua.
